Why a Co-op?
Cooperatives are democratically owned and operated for their members. They come in various forms — consumer co-ops (such as Wild Sage Market), producer co-ops (such as the Big Horn Co-op Farm and Ranch in Riverton, WY), outdoor co-ops like REI in Jackson Hole, and worker co-ops. You may have been part of a co-op for a very long time and not even realize it: credit unions are financial co-ops.
In food co-ops such as ours, you become an owner by buying one share — joining with your neighbors to provide the money that allows the co-op to exist. You’re investing in your own future, helping to support the local economy and a more responsible food system.
Unlike large chain supermarkets, food co-ops keep economic benefits close to home by supporting local producers and suppliers whenever possible. And profits are returned to the members or used to help the store better serve its patrons and our community.
Also, Wild Sage Market aims to be more than a grocery store — offering an opportunity for local and regional companies to expand and succeed. Most importantly, we aim to give employees a humane workplace and a fair wage.
One day soon, we want to say “See you at the co-op!” You can bring that day closer by becoming a member and encouraging others to join.
What Is a Co-op Grocery Store?
A co-op grocery store is owned and governed by its member-owners. Members elect a board of directors to set policy, while a general manager takes care of the day-to-day operations and oversees staff. The main operational difference between a co-op and a corporate owned grocery store is the co-op's ability to make all decisions from a local perspective rather than receive direction from an out-of-state corporation.
What Products Will Your Store Carry?
WSM will carry a mix of clean/conventional (e.g. foods that don't contain hydrogenated fats, artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors, high fructose corn syrup, etc.), locally produced, natural, and organic foods. Our vision is to make your store a one-stop shopping experience: meats, produce, dairy, prepared foods, boxed/canned goods, paper/cleaning products, and wellness products. Because we are a cooperative, YOU will help determine which products are carried.
Where Will Your Store Be Located?
Our goal is to be located in Green River, WY, preferably Downtown. There is only one grocery store located in Green River and it is operated by an out-of-state corporation. Sweetwater County is Wyoming's largest county which spans over 10,000 square miles. Green River is centrally located between Rock Springs, Farson, Eden, Granger, and Little America, making its location convenient for as many residents as possible. If located Downtown, access from Interstate 80 will make stopping quick and convenient.
